Holiday Ministry: Serving Our Community at Christmas

At OneCompassion, our vision is that no family in Johnston County goes without a Christmas. Through Holiday Ministry, we bring our community together to help provide food, clothing, gifts, and encouragement for local families while sharing the hope of Jesus Christ.

This ministry is made possible by people choosing to serve. Churches, businesses, individuals, and volunteers each have a part in helping families feel seen, valued, and loved during the Christmas season.

If you’ve considered getting involved but aren’t sure where to start, here’s what Holiday Ministry looks like and how you can help.

A Community Effort from Start to Finish

Holiday Ministry begins with local social workers and community partners nominating families who need additional support. Our team reviews each nomination and learns about the family’s needs so we can prepare to serve them well.

Families are then supported through OneCompassion, local churches, and community members who adopt a family. From shopping for clothing to preparing gifts and making deliveries, every step is an opportunity to care for a family personally.

Prayer is part of that preparation, too. As we get ready for Christmas, we pray for the families receiving support and for meaningful opportunities to share Christ’s love.

Holiday Ministry FAQs

What does it mean to adopt a family?

Adopting a family means taking responsibility for shopping for and packing their clothing, essential items, and Christmas gifts. OneCompassion provides information about each family member, including ages, sizes, and specific needs, to help guide your shopping.

You don’t have to figure everything out on your own. Our team provides instructions to help you prepare.

Can I adopt a family with others?

Yes! Your church, business, small group, friends, or family can adopt together. You might divide the shopping list or plan a day to shop and pack as a group.

It’s a meaningful way to serve together and make caring for our community part of your Christmas traditions.

How much should I plan to spend?

The commitment depends on the size of the family you adopt. Visit our Holiday Ministry page for current spending guidelines and participation details.

What if I want to help but can’t take on the shopping?

A financial gift helps provide food, gifts, and essential items through Holiday Ministry. Giving is another way to support a family when shopping and packing don’t fit your schedule.

What volunteer opportunities are available?

Volunteers help with tasks such as shopping, organizing items, packing bins, writing notes of encouragement, and assisting with deliveries.

Visit our Holiday Ministry page for available roles and signup information as the season approaches.

When do packing, drop off, and deliveries take place?

Registered participants receive instructions for the season, including important dates and details about preparing and delivering items. Be sure to follow those instructions, since schedules may change from year to year.

How can I support Holiday Ministry through prayer?

Pray for the families preparing for Christmas, the volunteers and adopters serving them, and the conversations that happen along the way. Pray that each family experiences encouragement and the hope of Jesus through this ministry.
